Quick answer

When to book a winter river cruise

Last verified: October 2026.

In summer, almost any departure time on the Chicago River works. Winter is different: sunset comes before 4:30 p.m. for weeks, the sun never climbs very high, and the time you book is the difference between sunlit terra cotta, a pink sky reflected in the glass towers, or a black river full of reflected lights.

This guide covers November 2026 to March 2027, with sunset and blue-hour times by week, a formula for choosing a departure and timing for the holiday extras. For which boats run in each month, see Do Chicago Architecture Boat Tours Run in Winter?

Shoreline Sightseeing's May 2026 guide calls afternoon "the best time of day" for most visitors, says sunset is "one of the most in-demand time slots of the day," and notes that morning and evening tours "are often the busiest times." In late fall, afternoon and sunset meet in the early afternoon.

More to do around a winter cruise

An afternoon Chicago River architecture cruise leaves the evening free. Popular ways to fill it are the view from Skydeck Chicago or 360 CHICAGO after dark, a dinner cruise from Navy Pier, the holiday lights on the Magnificent Mile and Millennium Park, or an evening architecture walking tour through the Loop. The options below update with live availability for these Chicago tours and experiences.

Times are calculated with NOAA's solar equations for downtown Chicago and checked against sunrise-sunset.org; other calculators can differ by a minute or two, and the 2027 times are the least certain. The earliest sunsets of the year, about 4:19 p.m., fall around December 6 to 10.

The formula

How to pick your departure time

Departure = sunset minus 60 to 90 minutes.

  • On a 90-minute cruise (Wendella or the CAC River Cruise aboard First Lady), leaving 75 minutes before sunset gives you about 45 minutes of daylight and golden hour, the sunset on the water and about 15 minutes of blue hour at the end.
  • On a 60-minute cruise (Shoreline's winter Classic), leave about 45 minutes before sunset.
  • On a 45-minute tour, leave about 30 minutes before sunset for the color, or at sunset for the lights.
  • If night lights are what you're after, flip it around and depart at sunset. By the end of the sailing, civil twilight is over and the skyline is fully lit.

Then make two checks. First, the cloud forecast: low, solid overcast cancels golden hour, and a midday departure for warmth makes more sense. Second, the booking calendar: if the slot you want isn't listed, take the nearest earlier one, because once the daylight has gone you can't get it back.

Light on the river

Which buildings glow when

The main branch of the Chicago River runs roughly east to west, and in winter that matters more than anything else. The towers on the north bank (the Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower, Marina City, Trump Tower and the Merchandise Mart) present their river facades to the south, toward the low sun, and catch it for most of the day. The river-facing walls on the south bank face north and stay in shade all winter, and the canyon floor itself gets little direct sun.

  • Midday: the Wrigley Building's white glazed terra cotta (the Chicago Architecture Center describes it as "six different shades" of white that brighten as the tower rises) and the corncob towers of Marina City are at their brightest and most detailed.
  • Late afternoon: the sun sets in the southwest in December (an azimuth of about 240° from December 4 to 10, per sunrisesunsettime.org), so the light comes in low across the city from behind you as you head east. Copper, limestone and terra cotta turn amber, and shadows from the south bank climb the north-bank facades.
  • Sunset at the river's bend: the curved green glass of 333 Wacker Drive follows the river, mirrors the water and picks up the color of the sky. It's one of the most photographed reflections on any cruise.
  • Blue hour and night: the Wrigley Building is floodlit, as it has been almost continuously since the 1920s; the CAC lists only three dark periods, during World War II, a 1971 relighting project and the 1973–74 energy crisis. The Merchandise Mart's 2.5-acre river facade becomes the screen for Art on theMART.

Month by month

Month-by-month timing guide

November 2026

November has the most choice. The CAC River Cruise aboard First Lady runs its Late Fall Schedule from November 2 to November 22 (90 minutes, from $57). Its full November times aren't public yet; only Saturday member slots at 11 a.m. and noon are confirmed, and in mid-October First Lady was still listing hourly departures from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The CAC promotes "Evening River Cruise" departures after 5 p.m., but whether any run in November is unconfirmed. With sunset near 4:30 p.m., a 3 p.m. sailing is the one to target. Shoreline switches to its 60-minute Classic tour from November 2. The Chicago Harbor Lock closes from mid-November to mid-April, according to the Chicago Harbor Safety Committee, so the lake-and-river routes end then. Last sailing dates are in Chicago Architecture Boat Tours in November 2026.

December 2026

Sunsets are the earliest of the year, at about 4:19 to 4:29 p.m., so a 2:45–3:15 p.m. departure gives you the full arc. Wendella sails year-round, and all its boats except the open-air Ouilmette have heated, climate-controlled lower cabins; it doesn't publish winter times outside its live booking calendar. Shoreline hasn't announced its last architecture sailing of 2026. Its December Skyline Lake Tours at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. come with holiday music and free hot chocolate, and because they leave from Navy Pier on the lake side, they don't need the lock; book those with Shoreline directly, since its GetYourGuide lake listing showed no December dates when we checked. For a direct comparison of the three operators, see CAC First Lady vs Wendella vs Shoreline in Late Fall.

January and February 2027

Wendella is effectively the only river option. Each week adds daylight: sunset moves from about 4:30 p.m. on January 1 to about 5:39 p.m. by February 28. Midday is the sensible default on bitter days, and golden hour comes back within easy reach from late January, once sunset moves past 5 p.m. If it's below about 15°F with wind, watch from the heated cabin and step out for the big bends. Our honest verdict on cold-weather cruising is in Are Chicago Boat Tours Worth It in the Cold?

March 2027

The schedule shifts twice. Before Sunday, March 14, sunset is at about 5:45–5:55 p.m. (Central Standard Time). After the clocks spring forward it's about 6:56 p.m., so re-check any departure time you planned before that weekend. The Chicago Harbor Lock reopened on April 15 in 2026, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, so March routes stay on the river.

After dark

Holiday and night extras

  • Millennium Park tree lighting, Friday, November 20, 2026. The ceremony starts at 6 p.m., and the tree stays lit through the holidays (last season it stayed up until January 11). You can't see it from the river, but you can walk there from the Michigan Avenue docks after an afternoon cruise.
  • Magnificent Mile Lights Festival, Saturday, November 21, 2026. The parade steps off at 5:30 p.m. The Wintrust Fireworks Spectacular goes off over the river at Michigan Avenue at about 7:30 p.m., the time on the festival page (the organizer's guide says about 7:15). Expect road closures and big crowds near the docks from mid-afternoon. Wendella's Holiday Fireworks Cruise (90 minutes, $50 for adults 13 and over, $25 for children 4–12, free under 4, with hot cocoa, cider and sweets) sails that night only from its dock at 400 N. Michigan Avenue. Wendella sells it directly and doesn't publish a departure time, so confirm with Wendella before you plan dinner around it. For the rest of that weekend, see our November week-by-week guide.
  • Art on theMART. Projections run Thursday to Sunday, 7:30–8:00 p.m., through December 27. The Joffrey Ballet's Nutcracker is projected from November 19 to December 27, 2026. On a 90-minute cruise, a departure around 6:15–6:30 p.m. puts you on the main branch during the show, if the operator offers one.
  • Navy Pier's Wintrust Winter WonderFest runs from November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027. It's indoors, but the pier's holiday lighting adds to the view from the evening lake tours that leave from Navy Pier. Every festive sailing of the season is in our guide to Chicago holiday boat tours, and the long weekend when WonderFest opens is covered in Thanksgiving weekend in Chicago.
  • New Year's Eve. Wendella's 90-minute New Year's Eve Fireworks Cruise sails on December 31, 2026, timed for the midnight fireworks ($50 for adults and children last season; Wendella hasn't posted the 2026 fare). For 2025–26 the city also launched a five-minute river fireworks show from the bridges, with Art on theMART as the countdown backdrop, and closed the river to boats from Franklin Street to Columbus Drive between 11:30 p.m. and 12:15 a.m. Whether that repeats in 2026 is unconfirmed.

Photography tips for winter light

  • Shoot the second half of the sailing. That's when blue hour falls if you followed the formula.
  • Phones: turn on Night mode, brace your elbows on the rail or a seat back and hold still for the whole capture. A moving boat blurs long exposures, so shoot bursts and keep the sharpest frame.
  • Cameras: at dusk, start around 1/125 s with a wide aperture and Auto ISO up to 3200–6400. At night, go no slower than 1/60 s. Image stabilization helps, but the boat still moves.
  • Shooting through cabin glass: put the lens (or a rubber lens hood) right against the window, stand square to the glass and wear dark clothing so you don't show up in the reflections. Ask about turning off nearby cabin lights only if the crew agrees.
  • Cold drains batteries fast. Keep a spare in an inside pocket, and let your camera warm up inside a closed bag when you come in so it doesn't fog.
  • Look for reflections: 333 Wacker at sunset, the floodlit Wrigley Building on the black water and Art on theMART's colors spreading across the river.
Trade-off

Warmth or light: choosing on the day

Midday is warmer, and not only on the thermometer. The National Weather Service's wind-chill guidance says bright sunshine "may increase the wind chill temperature by 10°F to 18°F" (its index assumes no sun). Because the canyon walls shade much of the river in winter, the sunny stretches at the main-branch bends and the open water near the lake feel very different from the shaded South Branch.

  • Cold or windy day (below about 20°F): go at midday, stay in the sun on deck and accept flatter light.
  • Mild, clear day (30s °F or warmer): go for golden hour and blue hour. It's the best sailing of the season.
  • Gray, overcast day: golden hour won't happen, so either go at midday or go after dark for the lights.

If the weather turns, check the operator's rules first in our guide to winter cancellations and refunds. For land-based alternatives once the boats stop, see Chicago architecture tours when the boats stop.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What time is sunset in Chicago in December 2026?

Between about 4:19 and 4:29 p.m. The earliest sunsets of the year, about 4:19 p.m., fall around December 6 to 10, and blue hour ends about 30 minutes after sunset.

What's the best departure time for a sunset cruise in November?

About 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. for a 90-minute cruise, or about 3:45 p.m. for a 60-minute one. Sunset moves from about 4:45 p.m. on November 1 to about 4:21 p.m. on November 30.

Do any Chicago architecture cruises run at night in winter?

Wendella sails year-round, but its winter evening times appear only in its booking calendar. Special cruises, such as Wendella's Holiday Fireworks Cruise on November 21 and its New Year's Eve cruise, run at night, and Shoreline runs evening lake tours from Navy Pier in December at 5, 6 and 7 p.m.

Is it warmer to cruise at noon?

Yes. Air temperature peaks in the early afternoon, and the National Weather Service says bright sunshine can raise the wind chill by 10 to 18°F. The low winter sun still leaves much of the river canyon in shade.

Can I see Art on theMART from a boat?

Yes, if your sailing is on the main branch near Wells and Franklin streets between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m., Thursday to Sunday. Check with the operator that an evening departure runs that night.

When does daylight saving time start in 2027, and how does it change my booking?

On Sunday, March 14, 2027. Sunset jumps about an hour later overnight, to roughly 6:56 p.m., so a late-afternoon slot that would have caught sunset the week before now ends in daylight.

Is the CAC First Lady cruise available at sunset in late November?

The season ends on November 22, 2026, and the full November schedule hadn't been released in October. Book the departure closest to 3 p.m. for golden light.

Will I see holiday lights from the river?

From November 21 you'll see the Magnificent Mile's tree lights at the Michigan Avenue bridge, along with floodlit landmarks, lit office towers and, from November 19, the Nutcracker projection on theMART. The Millennium Park tree is a short walk from the docks.
