CAC First Lady vs Wendella vs Shoreline in Late Fall
Until November 22, book the docent cruise. After that, book Wendella. Here is how the three main Chicago architecture cruises compare from late October to December: guides, heated cabins, prices, last sailings and refunds.
Which architecture cruise to book in late fall
Last verified: October 2026. Schedules change and the weather can cancel sailings, so check each operator's live booking calendar before you buy.
If you're in Chicago on or before Sunday, November 22, 2026, book the Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) River Cruise aboard First Lady. Its docents have the most training, and its lower cabins are climate-controlled. After that date, book Wendella. It is the only one of the three that says it sails year-round, and every boat but one has a heated lower lounge. Shoreline is the better pick only if you already hold a CityPASS or Go City pass, or you're staying near Navy Pier.

This page sticks to late October through December; our year-round comparison of the Chicago cruises covers the summer season.
Quick verdict
- Best for architecture depth: the CAC River Cruise aboard First Lady. Volunteer docents trained by the Architecture Center, 90 minutes, sailing through November 22.
- Best after Thanksgiving: the Wendella 90-Minute Chicago River Architecture Tour. It runs year-round, with heated lower lounges.
- Best for pass holders and Navy Pier: the Shoreline Sightseeing Architecture River Tour. It is included in Chicago CityPASS and Go City, and it boards at Navy Pier as well as Michigan Avenue.
- Best for families: the Wendella 45-Minute Tour ($28 adult / $14 child). If your dates fall before November 22, the CAC hands out free kids' activity kits.
- Best on a budget: Wendella. $45 buys a full 90 minutes ($20 for kids 4–12, under-4s free), and its ticket office gives in-person discounts to students and the military.

More Chicago tours for a late-fall trip
Most late-fall visitors pair a Chicago River architecture cruise with something indoors or on foot. Popular choices are Chicago Architecture Center walking tours of the Loop, Skydeck Chicago at Willis Tower, dinner cruises from Navy Pier and the Chicago CityPASS, which includes Shoreline's architecture cruise, the Shedd Aquarium and Skydeck. The options below update with live availability for these Chicago tours and experiences.
CAC River Cruise aboard First Lady: the architecture pick until November 22
Who guides: a volunteer docent certified by the Chicago Architecture Center leads every cruise. The CAC's cruise page says its docents get hundreds of hours of training, and its volunteer pages describe a nine-week course that includes a weekly architecture fundamentals class. River-cruise trainees also do four practice cruises on board before they lead a tour alone. First Lady says each cruise is led by one of more than 100 CAC docents. Each docent writes their own script within CAC standards, so two cruises can feel quite different. That variety is part of the appeal, although on a less lucky day it can mean a guide who wanders off topic.
Route and boats: the cruise covers all three branches of the river. According to the Ticketmaster venue listing, it goes up the North Branch to about Chicago Avenue and down the South Branch to Roosevelt Road. The CAC says its partner fleet carries up to 250 passengers and has open-air upper decks, full-service bars, climate-controlled lower cabins and marble-and-granite restrooms. The larger sister ships Leading Lady and Classic Lady are listed with indoor seating for about 96, and Emerald Lady for about 80. That is a fraction of a full boat, so on a cold sailing the warm seats go fast.
Late-fall details: the 2026 season runs March 15 to November 22, and the Late Fall Schedule covers November 2–22. Tours run rain or shine. The CAC sells its own tickets through Ticketmaster and warns that tickets bought on StubHub are not valid. You can add same-day admission to the Architecture Center for $5; GetYourGuide sells the pairing as the First Lady River Cruise & Architecture Center Combo (4.8/5 from 39 reviews). Arrive 30 minutes early, because boarding starts 15 minutes before departure.
Pros
- The most architecture-focused commentary on the river
- Rated 4.9 on Tripadvisor, and named among the best experiences in the US in Tripadvisor's 2026 Travelers' Choice "Best of the Best" awards
- Climate-controlled cabins and a full bar for hot drinks
- Free kids' activity kits at the CAC box office
Cons
- The most expensive of the three, from $57
- No refunds or exchanges on CAC tickets, even if you miss the boat
- Finished for the year before Thanksgiving (November 26)
- Seating is general admission, so warm cabin seats aren't guaranteed
Wendella: the cold-weather and value pick
Who guides: Wendella uses its own live guides. Reviews keep mentioning their humor and personal Chicago stories, and some note that a guide's knowledge comes from loving the city more than from formal architecture training. Expect an entertaining mix of history and architecture, not a seminar.
Route: the 90-Minute Chicago River Architecture Tour runs from Goose Island to Chinatown, passing more than 50 landmarks. Wendella's own list includes Centennial Fountain, the Riverwalk, Wolf Point, Goose Island and Willis Tower. The 45-minute tour covers the Riverwalk, Merchandise Mart, Wolf Point, Willis Tower, Centennial Fountain and Navy Pier. The Lake & River Tour needs the Chicago Harbor Lock to be open. Wendella doesn't publish a cutoff date, but a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers briefing lists the lock's winter closure from November 16, 2026, so expect the lake tour to stop around mid-November. Our November week-by-week guide has the detail.
Boats and comfort: Wendella says every boat has a heated, air-conditioned lounge on the lower deck, except the open-air Ouilmette. Seating indoors and out is first come, first served. The bar is full-service and cashless, there are restrooms with changing tables on the lower deck, and strollers are fine if they fold. The larger Wendella-class boats carry 100–250 guests; the Ouilmette takes 40–90.
Discounts (in person at the ticket office only, not on holidays): college students get 50% off on Tuesdays. Active-duty military and their spouses get 50% off Monday to Thursday. Veterans and reservists get $10 off Monday to Thursday.
Pros
- The only one of the three that says it sails year-round
- The cheapest 90-minute option at $45, plus a 45-minute tour at $28
- Changing your mind costs nothing as long as you switch times before departure
- Full refund if the captain cancels for weather
Cons
- Commentary is lighter on architecture than the CAC's
- The Michigan Avenue dock is 62 steps down; step-free boarding is at the West Dock
- Departure frequency in December isn't published
Shoreline Sightseeing: the pass-holder and Navy Pier pick
Who guides: professional guides narrate live, and pass providers and reviewers describe them as knowledgeable and entertaining.
Route: Shoreline's FAQ describes the Architecture River Tour as the main branch, then up the North Branch to the East Bank Club, then south past Willis Tower to the Old Post Office. It promises "40+" landmarks, including Tribune Tower, the Wrigley Building and Marina City. Both docks run the same route.
Boats and comfort: this is where Shoreline differs most in the cold. It runs 11 tour vessels holding 150–260 people. Its own FAQ says most boats are double-deckers with a partly covered overhead, but four architecture boats are single-deck with no cover. Its accessibility page says that, in general, nothing protects passengers from sun, rain or wind. Go City's listing does mention "indoor and outdoor decks," which conflicts with Shoreline's own wording, so don't count on a heated cabin. Drinks and snacks are sold on board (card only), and restrooms are on the lower deck.
Late-fall details: in the colder months the tour shrinks to the 60-minute Classic, starting in early to mid-November. The sources disagree on the exact day: CityPASS's Shoreline page says November 2, CityPASS's main pass page says mid-November (through mid-April), Go City says early November, and a third-party guide says November 1. In spring and fall, Shoreline says its schedule depends heavily on the weather. It has not published a last 2026 sailing date. In December, Shoreline's 5, 6 and 7 p.m. Skyline Lake Tours (not the architecture tour) include free hot chocolate and holiday music; the GetYourGuide listing for that lake tour showed no dates after November 1 when we checked, so book the December sailings with Shoreline.
Passes: Chicago CityPASS lets you pick the Shoreline tour as one of three choice attractions. On citypass.com in October 2026 the pass cost $144 for adults and $114 for children (3–11), against $288.90 for the same tickets bought separately. CityPASS holders must reserve a time in advance. Go City's All-Inclusive pass also covers the tour; resellers listed it in October 2026 from $149 for one day, $189 for two and $229 for three, but prices vary by reseller, so check the current price. You redeem it at a Shoreline ticket booth on the day. Go City puts the tour's value without a pass at "up to $54." GetYourGuide sells Go City's pick-your-attractions Chicago Explorer Pass, which includes the Shoreline cruise; the All-Inclusive version isn't sold there.
Pros
- Included in CityPASS, C3 and Go City
- The Navy Pier dock is the most wheelchair-friendly
- 4.8 on Tripadvisor across more than 10,800 reviews
- Leashed dogs welcome
Cons
- The most exposed to the cold of the three
- A shorter tour (60 minutes) in the cold months
- No accessible restrooms, and the Michigan Ave dock isn't accessible
- No published end date
Which one should you book?
By date
- Late October to November 1: all three are running. Pick the CAC cruise for depth, or Wendella's Lake & River Tour for skyline views from the lake.
- November 2–15: the CAC cruise is on its Late Fall Schedule, Wendella's lake tour is in its final days, and Shoreline has probably switched to the 60-minute Classic. The CAC is the best choice in these two weeks.
- November 16–22: the last chance for the CAC cruise. Weekend slots go first, so book now.
- Thanksgiving week (November 23–29): the CAC is finished for the year. Wendella is your safest bet; Shoreline is unconfirmed. Our Thanksgiving weekend guide has a day-by-day plan.
- December: book Wendella, or choose one of the indoor architecture tours for when the boats stop. Festive sailings are in our holiday boat tours guide.
By traveler
- Architecture buffs or repeat visitors: the CAC cruise, if your dates allow.
- Travelers who hate the cold: Wendella. Grab a lounge seat early.
- Families with kids under 10: Wendella's 45-minute tour, or Shoreline's 60-minute Classic if you have passes.
- Wheelchair users: the CAC cruise on an accessible-boat departure, Wendella from the West Dock, or Shoreline from Navy Pier. Call ahead whichever you choose.
- Pass holders: Shoreline. You've already paid for it.
- If your plans might change: Wendella or Shoreline. Both let you change times before departure, and the CAC doesn't on its own tickets.

Cold-weather seating and comfort tips
- Arrive 30 minutes early. All three seat passengers first come, first served, and the indoor seats go first.
- Start up top, then go below. The upper deck gives you the best views of the South Branch's skyscraper canyon. Head down to the cabin for the longer, less interesting stretches.
- The windows have limits. Cabin windows are fine for buildings straight ahead, but poor for looking up at towers and for glare-free photos.
- Pick a midday departure. It is the warmest part of the day, and the light is still good. In Chicago the sun sets at 4:45 p.m. on November 2, around 4:30 p.m. by mid-November and about 4:22 p.m. by November 30 (timeofsunset.com). Our November sunset table suggests a departure time for each week.
- Order a hot drink early. The CAC boats and Wendella have full bars, and Shoreline sells drinks on most boats. The queue builds once everyone gets cold.
- Dress for the wind, not the temperature. It is colder on the water. Our full packing list is in What to Wear on a Chicago Boat Tour in November and Winter.
- For photos, bring gloves with touchscreen fingertips. Batteries drain fast in the cold, so keep a spare in an inside pocket.
Book a late-fall architecture cruise
Up to November 22, the docent cruise; after it, Wendella. Both book through GetYourGuide with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Frequently asked questions
Which Chicago architecture cruise is best in November?
For dates up to November 22, 2026, the CAC cruise aboard First Lady, with docent-led commentary and climate-controlled cabins. After that, Wendella is the most reliable choice because it says it runs year-round.
Does any Chicago architecture boat tour run after Thanksgiving 2026?
Which boat has the best heated cabin?
Can I get a refund if it's freezing on the day?
Not on tickets bought from the CAC, which allows no refunds or exchanges. Wendella and Shoreline won't refund your ticket either, but both let you change to another time before departure, and all three refund you if the operator cancels. Booked through GetYourGuide, all three listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Our booking and cancellation tips set out each operator's rules.
Is the CAC cruise worth $12 more than Wendella?
For architecture lovers, yes, because its docents have the deepest training. If you mainly want skyline views and a fun narrator, Wendella costs less and has the more flexible ticket policy.
Does CityPASS include the CAC or Wendella cruise?
No. CityPASS includes Shoreline's Architecture River Tour. Go City also includes Shoreline; whether it includes any Wendella product isn't confirmed.
Which cruise is best with young kids in cold weather?
Wendella's 45-minute tour. It is short, has a heated lounge and has changing tables on board.
Do all three cover Willis Tower and Wolf Point?
Yes. All three go down the South Branch past Willis Tower and pass Wolf Point, where the river's three branches meet. Wendella's 45-minute tour lists both too.
