What's still running in November
Last verified: October 2026. Schedules change with weather and demand, so check each operator's live calendar before you book.
November is the month Chicago's river-cruise season winds down. The famous docent-led cruise makes its final sailing, the lock to Lake Michigan closes, and sunset comes before 5 pm. You can still get a great architecture cruise this month if you know the dates. This guide covers November week by week. Quick answer
- CAC River Cruise aboard First Lady: last 2026 sailing is Sunday, November 22. It runs on a "Late Fall Schedule" from Nov 2 to Nov 22.
- Wendella: says it cruises year-round with heated lower cabins. It's your safest bet for Thanksgiving week and beyond. See CAC vs Wendella vs Shoreline compared for late fall.
- Lake & River routes: a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers briefing lists the Chicago Harbor Lock's typical winter closure as Nov 16, 2026 – Apr 14, 2027. Expect lake-and-river tours that pass through the lock to make their last trips around November 14–15.
- Shoreline Sightseeing: shortens its architecture tour from 75 to 60 minutes in November. Its last 2026 date isn't published yet.
- Best plan: book a weekday afternoon departure before Nov 22 if you want the CAC docents. Leave one backup day in case of weather.

Where the table quotes GetYourGuide, it is that site's booking calendar on October 16, 2026. It agrees with the operators on the CAC's final day, and it shows Wendella's 90- and 45-minute river tours open every day of November, Thanksgiving included.
More to do in Chicago this November
A November trip to Chicago usually pairs a river cruise with the start of the holiday season. Alongside the Chicago River architecture cruises from the Michigan Avenue docks, visitors book Chicago Architecture Center walking tours of the Loop, dinner cruises from Navy Pier, Skydeck Chicago at Willis Tower and the Chicago CityPASS, which includes Shoreline's architecture cruise, the Shedd Aquarium and Skydeck. The options below update automatically with live availability for these Chicago tours and experiences.
November 2026, week by week
Nov 1–7: Clocks fall back, and the fall-color window closes
- Daylight saving time ends Sunday, Nov 1. Sunset jumps to about 4:47 pm that day and drops to about 4:39 pm by Nov 7.
- The CAC cruise switches from its Early Fall schedule (Oct 13–Nov 1) to its Late Fall Schedule on Nov 2. Expect fewer departures than in summer and confirm times on the booking calendar.
- The lock is still open, so this is a good week for a Wendella Lake & River Tour, which adds the skyline view from Lake Michigan. Its GetYourGuide calendar has no November dates, so check Wendella's own booking page.
- Shoreline's 60-minute winter tour starts in early to mid-November: some resellers say Nov 1, while Shoreline's own blog says "in the middle of November." Check the duration shown on your booking.
Nov 8–14: Last week for lake views
- Sunset slips from about 4:38 pm to about 4:32 pm.
- The Chicago Harbor Lock closes for its annual winter shutdown in mid-November. A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers briefing lists the typical closure as Nov 16, 2026 – Apr 14, 2027. A USACE release republished by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District says the lock's "primary boating season runs mid-April through mid-November." Our winter guide uses Nov 14 as the last open day. Treat Nov 14–15 as the practical last chance, and confirm with your operator.
- If you want a lake-and-river cruise, book this week. After the lock closes, these tours end or switch to river-only routes. The Seadog 75-minute speedboat architecture cruise still has GetYourGuide dates up to Friday, Nov 13.
Nov 15–22: Lights Festival weekend and the CAC's final days
- Shoreline shortens tours to 60 minutes by mid-November at the latest.
- On average, Chicago gets its first measurable snow around Nov 18, according to National Weather Service data reported by NBC Chicago.
- Friday, Nov 20: Christkindlmarket opens at Daley Plaza, about a 10-minute walk from the river docks.
- Saturday, Nov 21: Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival. Lights Festival Lane runs 11 am–4 pm at 401 N. Michigan Ave, which is the plaza by Shoreline's Michigan Avenue dock. The parade steps off at 5:30 pm. The organizer's guide puts the fireworks over the river at Michigan Avenue at approximately 7:15 pm, though its festival page lists 7:30 pm. The Magnificent Mile Association lists North Michigan Avenue (Oak St. to Wacker), Oak Street and Upper Wacker Drive (Michigan Ave. to the east turnaround) as closed from 3 pm to 7:30 pm, and Upper Columbus Drive from 5 pm. The DuSable Bridge closes to pedestrians at 3 pm. All three Michigan Avenue docks sit inside this zone. Book a morning or early-afternoon cruise, or plan to arrive on foot well before 3 pm.
- Wendella's Holiday Fireworks Cruise sails Nov 21 only. It's a 90-minute family cruise with music and treats, timed for the festival fireworks (from $50 adult, $25 kids 4–12), and it's sold by Wendella directly. The parade itself isn't visible from the boat. Our holiday guide lists every holiday sailing through New Year's Eve.
- Sunday, Nov 22: final CAC River Cruise of 2026. Weekend departures on closing days tend to sell out, so book ahead.
Nov 23–30: Thanksgiving week
- The CAC docent cruise is finished for the year. Wendella is the operator that publicly says it keeps sailing.
- Thanksgiving Day (Thu, Nov 26): the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade runs up State Street from Ida B. Wells Dr. to Randolph St. The city lists an 8 am start, and ABC7 reports a 7:45 am step-off. The parade route is a few blocks west of the docks. Wendella hasn't published Thanksgiving Day hours, so confirm before you plan around it (GetYourGuide currently shows Nov 26 as bookable for Wendella and Shoreline). Christkindlmarket keeps shortened hours (11 am–4 pm) that day. For a five-day plan, see Thanksgiving weekend in Chicago.
- Fri, Nov 27: Navy Pier's Wintrust Winter WonderFest opens and runs through Jan 3, 2027. It's a good indoor plan if the weather turns.
- Sunset is about 4:23 pm, so any cruise after about 4:30 pm will be a city-lights cruise.
Operator details for November
CAC River Cruise aboard First Lady
This is the cruise most people mean when they say "the architecture boat tour." CAC-certified volunteer docents lead every sailing, covering all three branches of the river in 90 minutes. Tickets start at $57. Tours go rain or shine, and the boats have climate-controlled lower cabins. Tickets bought from the CAC can't be refunded or exchanged, and CAC says this includes passengers who miss the boat. Arrive 30 minutes early, since boarding starts 15 minutes before departure. CAC sells tickets through Ticketmaster and warns that StubHub tickets are not valid. You can add Chicago Architecture Center admission to your cart for $5; on GetYourGuide the same pairing is sold as the First Lady River Cruise & Architecture Center Combo (4.8/5 from 39 reviews).
On accessibility, all First Lady fleet boats except First Lady and Little Lady are wheelchair accessible. When you book, pick a departure time that CAC marks as running on an accessible boat.
Wendella
Wendella has sailed from the Wrigley Building side of the river since 1938 and says it cruises year-round, "rain, snow, wind, and shine." Every boat except the open-air Ouilmette has a heated, air-conditioned lower lounge with speakers that carry the guide's narration. In November you can choose the 90-minute River Architecture Tour ($45), the 45-minute version ($28), or, until the lock closes, the Lake & River Tour ($45). If the captain cancels for weather, Wendella refunds your ticket. Wendella publishes departure times only in its live booking widget, so check it the week you travel.
Shoreline Sightseeing
Shoreline sails from two docks, 401 N. Michigan Ave and Navy Pier (124 N. Streeter Dr.), and both docks run the full river route. The Navy Pier dock is the easier one for wheelchair users. In colder months the tour becomes the 60-minute Classic (from $39). Shoreline's lake tour shrinks from 45 to 30 minutes at the same time; its GetYourGuide listing shows no dates after November 1. That lake tour leaves from Navy Pier on the lake side, so it doesn't need the Harbor Lock. Shoreline is also the architecture cruise included in Chicago CityPASS and Go City passes. Shoreline hasn't announced its final 2026 river date. In 2023, NBC Chicago reported Shoreline running daily into early December except on Thanksgiving, but that is a past year and not a promise for 2026.
Everyone else
City Cruises Seadog finished its season in October, though GetYourGuide still lists speedboat architecture dates up to November 13. Chicago Line Cruises says it runs "through late fall, weather permitting" from Ogden Slip but hasn't posted a closing date. First Lady's non-CAC sightseeing cruises, the River & Lake and Chicago By Night tours (the former Mercury lineup), use the lock and share the March 15–November 22 season, so expect lake portions to end with the lock closure.

How to use this:
- Best all-round pick: a departure about 60–90 minutes before sunset. You get daylight detail on the buildings at the start and dusk with the lights coming on at the end. Our winter time-of-day guide gives a departure time for each week through March.
- Midday (11 am–1 pm): the warmest part of the day and the best choice for photographing details.
- Evening: the skyline glows and the cold bites. After dark, plan to watch from the heated cabin.
Our sunset and evening cruise guide covers the after-dark options in more detail.
November weather on the river
National Weather Service normals for Chicago put the November average high at 48.4°F and the average low at 34.1°F. It feels colder than that on the river, where wind funnels between towers and skims off the water. NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals give O'Hare an average of 1.8 inches of snow in November, spread over about 1.6 snowy days (Midway averages 1.5 inches). The first measurable snowfall usually comes in the second half of the month. Rain and gray skies are more common than snow.
What to expect onboard:
- Upper decks are open-air. Sit there for the views, then warm up below. Every operator listed here offers some form of indoor seating, but Wendella's Ouilmette has no enclosed lounge.
- Bars sell hot drinks on most boats. Wendella says it sells gloves and hats onboard in case you forget yours.
- Dress in layers: a windproof shell, hat, gloves and warm shoes. Our full packing guide covers kids, phones and what each operator lets you bring.
Booking and cancellation tips
- If you want the CAC cruise, book the date first and plan your trip around it. You get 21 days of Late Fall sailings, and closing weekend is the busiest.
- Know the refund rules before you pay.
- CAC: no refunds or exchanges on tickets bought from the CAC. GetYourGuide's listing for the same cruise offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
- Wendella: refunds if the captain cancels. If you cancel, you can't get a refund but can reschedule before departure. For the Holiday Fireworks Cruise, tickets become non-refundable and non-transferable after departure time.
- Shoreline: tickets are non-refundable. You can change them free before departure. Reseller listings show a $10-per-ticket fee for same-day changes.
- Weather rarely cancels a cruise. These boats sail in drizzle and cold. High winds, lightning or ice are what keep them docked.
- Use passes wisely. If you're also visiting Skydeck or the Shedd, a CityPASS or Go City pass that includes Shoreline can be cheaper than buying tickets one by one. The CAC cruise is not part of CityPASS. Our CityPASS guide does the math.
- Watch Nov 21 logistics. Rideshares can't reach Michigan Avenue or Upper Wacker docks from 3 pm to 7:30 pm.
- Have a dry-land backup. If the boats are done or the weather turns, the Chicago Architecture Center's exhibits and the CAC-guided Treasures of the Golden Age walking tour (4.8/5 from 225 reviews, exhibit admission included) run all month. More ideas are in our winter guide.

Frequently asked questions
What is the last day for the Chicago Architecture Center boat tour in 2026?
Sunday, November 22, 2026, according to both First Lady and the Chicago Architecture Center. One tourism listing shows November 23, but the operators' own sites say November 22.
Do any Chicago architecture boat tours run after Thanksgiving?
Wendella says it operates year-round with heated cabins, so it is the most reliable choice after Thanksgiving. Shoreline has run into early December in past years, but it hasn't confirmed dates for 2026.
Can I take a boat tour on Thanksgiving Day 2026?
Possibly, but no operator has confirmed Thanksgiving Day departures yet. Wendella is the most likely to be sailing, and GetYourGuide currently lists November 26 departures for Wendella and Shoreline. Check the live calendar a few days before you go.
Can I still do a lake-and-river cruise in November?
Only during the first half of the month. A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers briefing lists the Chicago Harbor Lock's typical winter closure as starting November 16, 2026, so plan on November 14–15 as the last realistic days. After that, tours from the river can't reach Lake Michigan.
Can I see the Lights Festival fireworks from a boat?
Yes. Wendella's Holiday Fireworks Cruise on November 21 is a 90-minute river cruise timed for the fireworks over the river at Michigan Avenue. The parade isn't visible from the water.
Is a November boat tour too cold?
Not if you dress for it. Highs average about 48°F. All the main operators have indoor seating, and most have heated cabins, so you can move between deck and cabin.
Are November cruises shorter?
Shoreline's is: it runs 60 minutes instead of 75 in colder months. The CAC and Wendella cruises stay at 90 minutes, and Wendella also offers a 45-minute option.
What time should I book a November cruise?
For the best light, book a departure that leaves about 60–90 minutes before sunset, which is roughly 3 pm. For skyline lights, any departure after about 4:45 pm will be in the dark.
