Shoreline Sightseeing switches to a shorter 60-minute winter tour in November and runs holiday-themed lake cruises in December, but it has not posted its last 2026 sailing date. They line up with the operators on the big dates: the CAC cruise's last bookable day is November 22, and both Wendella river tours take bookings every day through January and February, Thanksgiving included, with no December 25 departure. Two listings run longer than the operators' own pages suggest. Shoreline's river tour is bookable daily through January 3, 2027, and the Seadog speedboat architecture cruise is still on sale through November 13, 2026. This is the cruise most people mean when they say "the Chicago architecture boat tour." It is narrated by the Chicago Architecture Center's trained volunteer docents. Both First Lady's homepage and the CAC's own cruise page list the 2026 cruising season as March 15 – November 22, and the CAC splits the final stretch into a "Late Fall Schedule" from November 2 to November 22. Loop Chicago's event listing says November 23. We go with the two official operator sources, but if your trip falls on that final weekend, check the live calendar.

- Comfort: First Lady's boats carry up to 250 passengers and have open-air upper decks, a full-service bar and climate-controlled lower cabins. Tours run rain or shine.
- Boarding: meet at the dock at 112 E. Wacker Dr. (look for the black awning) 30 minutes before departure. Boarding starts 15 minutes before sailing.
- 2027: the 2027 opening date had not been published as of October 2026. The 2026 season opened in mid-March, which hints at a similar window, but that is a pattern, not a promise.
2. Wendella: the year-round option
Wendella, family-run since 1935, is the operator that answers "yes" to the winter question. Its homepage says the company keeps cruising "while others dock for the season," and its tours page lists all three architecture tours as running daily. Wendella's boat-information page says every vessel except one (the Ouilmette) has a heated and air-conditioned lower-deck lounge. Its FAQ is blunt about snow: the cabins are heated, and if conditions get too wild, the tour is cancelled and refunded.

- 90-Minute Lake & River Architecture Tour: $45. This one leaves the river through the Chicago Harbor Lock. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lists the lock as open April 15 – November 14, 2026, with winter construction scheduled from mid-November to mid-April. Don't count on the lake route in winter. Its GetYourGuide calendar already ends on October 29 and picks up again on April 16, 2027, so book the river-only tours instead and confirm on Wendella's calendar.
- Holiday specials: Holiday Fireworks Cruise on November 21, 2026 (the night of the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival). New Year's Eve Fireworks Cruise on December 31, 2026. St. Patrick's Day cruises on March 13, 2027. These are sold by Wendella directly, not on GetYourGuide.
What we couldn't confirm: how many departures run per day in deep winter, and whether Wendella closes on Christmas Day or Thanksgiving. A 2023 NBC Chicago report said tours ran every day except Christmas, but that is three years old. Check the calendar for holiday dates. (GetYourGuide's calendar for the river tours currently skips December 25 and includes Thanksgiving Day.)
3. Shoreline Sightseeing: shorter tours, holiday lake cruises
Shoreline runs a 75-minute "Signature" architecture tour (from $46) in season and a 60-minute "Classic" tour (from $39). It shortens tours as the weather cools, but sources disagree on when. Shoreline's own blog says the switch happens "every year in the middle of November." CityPASS says November 2, and the Expedia and GetYourGuide listings say November 1 – April 15. In practice, expect the 60-minute version from early to mid-November.
Shoreline's Skyline Lake Tour page confirms that in December, the 5:00, 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. lake departures from Navy Pier come with holiday music and complimentary hot chocolate. Navy Pier listed these "Hot Chocolate Cruises" for December 5–28 last season, on Fridays through Sundays. The 2026 dates are not posted yet, and the December sailings are not on GetYourGuide (its Shoreline Lake Michigan Skyline Cruise listing has no dates after November 1), so book those with Shoreline.
Unconfirmed: Shoreline's last 2026 Architecture River Tour and its 2027 restart. In 2023, NBC Chicago reported Shoreline's river tours ran through December 3. Treat that as history, not a schedule. GetYourGuide is currently taking bookings for the river tour through January 3, 2027, which suggests a longer run this year; confirm with Shoreline before you count on a late-December date. Note too that Shoreline's FAQ says its architecture boats' upper decks "are open and provide no protection from the elements," so dress for full exposure.
4. Seadog, Chicago Line and City Cruises
- Seadog (run by City Cruises from Navy Pier) sails April through October. Its last themed outing of 2026 is the Haunted River & Lake Tour, October 16–31. It does not run in winter. GetYourGuide is still selling the Seadog 75-minute speedboat architecture cruise for dates up to November 13, 2026, so early-November visitors may still find a seat.
- Chicago Line Cruises opened its 40th season on March 12, 2026 and says it runs "through late Fall, weather dependent." No exact closing date has been published.

November. This is your last good window for choice. The CAC/First Lady cruise runs through November 22, Shoreline runs its 60-minute format, and Wendella runs daily. The Harbor Lock closes after November 14, so lake-and-river routes end then. November 21, 2026 is the Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival: parade at 5:30 p.m., and the Magnificent Mile Association's guide puts the Wintrust Fireworks Spectacular over the DuSable Bridge at approximately 7:15 p.m. (the association's festival page also cites 7:30 p.m.). North Michigan Avenue (Oak Street to Wacker Drive) and Upper Wacker Drive near the docks are closed from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. that Saturday. December and the holidays. Wendella is your main architecture option on the river. Shoreline's hot-chocolate lake cruises add some festive cheer, and City Cruises runs holiday dining sailings; every festive sailing is listed in our guide to Chicago holiday boat tours. Light Up the Lake was Navy Pier's 2024 holiday festival; its 2026 holiday event is Wintrust Winter WonderFest, open November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027 ($27 online, $32 within 24 hours or at the door). Navy Pier lists New Year's Eve fireworks at 11:59 p.m. on December 31.
January–February. Wendella's river tours are the only scheduled architecture cruises we could find. Expect thinner schedules and occasional weather cancellations.
March. The season restarts. In 2026, Chicago Line reopened March 12 and the CAC/First Lady cruise on March 15. Wendella's St. Patrick's Day cruises (March 13, 2027) coincide with the river-dyeing. Check 2027 openings in February.

On the open river, wind between the towers makes it feel colder.
Does the river freeze? Rarely, and almost never completely. The Chicago Academy of Sciences/Nature Museum notes that the main downtown stem doesn't fully freeze. Stretches of the North Branch ice up most years, and the city runs an ice breaker if the main stem freezes. During the January 2019 polar vortex, the Chicago Fire Department's ice breaker was working the river. Ice and extreme cold are exactly the conditions in which captains cancel.

Cancellations and refunds
- CAC/First Lady: tours "depart rain or shine," and the CAC says refunds and exchanges for ticket purchases aren't permitted, so pick your date carefully.
- Wendella: if the captain cancels, you get a full refund. If you cancel, tickets are non-refundable but can be moved to another time before departure. After the scheduled departure, they're non-refundable and non-transferable.
- Shoreline: tickets are non-refundable. Free date/time changes before departure (subject to availability), and a $10-per-ticket fee for changes after departure. If Shoreline cancels for weather, prepaid tickets are refunded or rescheduled.
- Third-party bookings (Viator, GetYourGuide, CityPASS and similar) follow the reseller's policy, which is often more flexible. Most of the cruises on this page show free cancellation up to 24 hours before on GetYourGuide; the Christmas Eve dinner cruise is non-refundable.

- Chicago Architecture Center (111 E. Wacker Dr.): the Chicago City Model Experience is the CAC's 4,250-building scale model of Chicago, according to the CAC's "Our History" page, with light and film projections. Center hours are Sun–Thu 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Fri–Sat 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Adult admission is $15. - CAC walking tours: "Art Deco Skyscrapers: Landmark Lobbies" is a one-hour tour the CAC pitches as a way to "step out of the cold" inside three Art Deco lobbies. "Must-See Chicago" and "A Walk Through Time" cover the Loop outdoors. Winter frequency is reduced. On GetYourGuide, the CAC-guided Treasures of the Golden Age walking tour runs through the winter and includes admission to the Center's exhibits.

Why a winter cruise can still be a good choice
Fewer crowds. Off-season cruises are much less crowded than peak-summer departures, so you have more space at the rail and an easier choice of seat.

- Book direct or check the operator's live calendar the week you travel. Winter schedules are trimmed with little notice.
- Go in the late afternoon. Chicago's earliest sunset is on December 8 at 4:19 p.m., according to sunrise-sunset.org (timeanddate.com also lists December 8). A 3:00–3:30 p.m. departure catches both daylight and the city lights coming on.
