Chicago Architecture Tours When the Boats Stop
Chicago's architecture tours keep running in winter, on foot, underground and indoors. The CAC cruise makes its last sailing on November 22, but many of the city's finest spaces are inside: Gilded Age lobbies, Art Deco elevator banks, a Tiffany dome and Frank Lloyd Wright's light court. Here are the winter alternatives, with prices and schedules.
The best winter alternatives to an architecture cruise
Last verified: October 2026. Winter 2026–27 schedules are released in stages, so confirm dates and times with the operator before you book.
The CAC River Cruise aboard First Lady makes its last 2026 sailing on November 22. The Chicago Harbor Lock closes from about November 16 until mid-April 2027: the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reopened it on April 15 in 2026 and says the main boating season runs from mid-April to mid-November, but it hasn't published 2027 dates yet. If you're in town between late November and March (see Do Chicago Architecture Boat Tours Run in Winter? and Chicago Architecture Boat Tours in November 2026: Last Sailing Dates), you can still see the buildings on foot, underground, by bus and from above. This guide covers those land-based alternatives.

More Chicago architecture to book this winter
Winter is a good season for an indoor Chicago architecture walking tour of the Loop's lobbies, a guided walk through the Chicago Pedway, the view over the river from Skydeck at Willis Tower or 360 CHICAGO, the galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a heated Chicago River architecture cruise with Wendella. The options below update with live availability for these Chicago tours and experiences.
1. The Chicago Architecture Center
The CAC at 111 E. Wacker Dr. is the best first stop on a cold day. Its centerpiece, the Chicago City Model Experience, is a large-scale model of downtown that helps you make sense of the skyline before you walk it.
- Hours: Sunday–Thursday 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Friday–Saturday 10 a.m.–7 p.m. CAC gives last entry as one hour before closing on its Visit page but 30 minutes on its ticket terms, so arrive at least an hour before closing.
- Admission: $15 for adults, $10 for students with ID (in person), and free for kids 5 and under. Every CAC walking or bus tour ticket includes Center entry within 7 days of the tour.
- Holiday hours: closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day; it closes at 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
- Winter 2026–27 exhibitions: Currents: 60 Years of the Chicago Architecture Center (through Feb 28, 2027); Studio Gang's Flyway City: Architecture for a Flourishing Ecosystem (through Jan 2, 2027); Chicago's Living Habitat, co-curated by Openlands (through Jan 14, 2027); and the long-term Icons of Chicago skyscraper models.
- Member perk: CAC members get free Essential walking tours and 66% off Premier walking tours. Membership starts at $75, so it can pay for itself if two of you take two or three tours.
On GetYourGuide, the CAC-guided Treasures of the Golden Age walking tour (4.8/5 from 225 reviews) includes admission to the Center's exhibits, so one booking covers both.
2. CAC walking and bus tours that suit winter
CAC runs walking tours year-round, but departures change by season. The October calendar showed tours at 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Expect fewer departures from December to March, and check the live calendar.
- Art Deco Skyscrapers: Landmark Lobbies (1 hr). CAC built this tour for cold weather. It's a shortened version of the Riverfront Deco tour that ducks into three Art Deco lobbies, and it answers whether the green-topped Carbide & Carbon Building was meant to look like a Champagne bottle. The full Art Deco Skyscrapers: The Riverfront tour visits five lobbies; AAA lists it from $35 with Center admission included. A similar Loop route is bookable as the Art Deco Skyscrapers walking tour on Viator (4.8/5 from 197 reviews).
- Interior Treasures of the Golden Age (2 hrs). This is the renamed Historic Treasures of Chicago's Golden Age, sold on GetYourGuide as the Treasures of the Golden Age walking tour. It goes inside the Chicago Cultural Center, the Palmer House and Macy's on State (the former Marshall Field's), so you spend a big share of the time indoors.
- Must-See Chicago (1.5 hrs, $35). A fast greatest-hits loop: the Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower, Willis Tower, Millennium Park and the river. It's mostly outdoors, so save it for a milder day.
- Single-building tours. CAC's catalog includes tours of the Rookery ($15), the Marquette Building, the Palmer House, the Chicago Board of Trade, Union Station, the Merchandise Mart, the Reliance Building and Tiffany in Chicago. Not all of them run every week, but they're excellent when they do.
- Chicago Pedway (1.75 hrs, about 1.5 miles). It starts at the Pedway entrance on the south side of 120 N. LaSalle St. It isn't ADA-accessible and has no restrooms along the route. One CAC page currently lists it as "available for private tours only." CAC private walking tours cost $30 per person with a $250 minimum.
The CAC bus tour
Architectural Highlights by Bus (3 hrs, from 111 E. Wacker) travels through the Loop, Hyde Park/Kenwood, Bronzeville and the Magnificent Mile. It stops at places like the Rookery, Robie House and Mies van der Rohe's Crown Hall, including some interiors. The claim that it runs "Saturdays only" in winter appears only on a third-party site. CAC's page shows no winter schedule, and older CAC listings show Saturday 9:30 a.m. departures in late summer and fall, so treat winter dates as unconfirmed until you see one in the booking calendar. The bus steps make it difficult for wheelchair users. It isn't sold on GetYourGuide, so book it with CAC.
3. Other operators' winter walking tours
- Inside Chicago Walking Tours: Open Your Eyes (Pedway). This is the best pick for the worst weather. It lasts about 2 hours and covers roughly 1.5 miles, almost entirely indoors through the Pedway and the buildings it connects. The operator says it runs daily, caps groups at 20 and involves several staircases. Resellers list it from about $35. The same company runs The World Within: Dazzling Interiors of the Loop daily and All That Glam (Roaring '20s interiors) on weekend mornings. On GetYourGuide, Inside Chicago sells its Underground Pedway & Downtown Secrets tour (4.8/5 from 335 reviews).
- Chicago Detours: Loop Interior Architecture Walking Tour. The operator says much of the tour is spent inside lobbies, corridors and the Pedway. It covers about 0.7 mile and includes a printed Pedway map. Prices start at $28 for adults and $18 for children, and kids under 5 go free. Listings give the length as 90 minutes to 2 hours.
- Chicago's Secret Interiors Architectural Walking Tour. This 2-hour tour is capped at 15. It starts in Union Station's Great Hall (under the Clinton Street sign) and ends at the old Marshall Field's building at 111 N. State St., with stops that include the Rookery, the Marquette Building, the Chicago Cultural Center and the Board of Trade. Tripadvisor lists the operator as Chicago River Boat Architecture Tours, with prices from about $35; on GetYourGuide it has 4.8/5 from 713 reviews. The Rookery is closed on Sundays, so book a weekday or Saturday.
- Free Chicago Walking Tours: Loop Interiors. This 2-hour, 1.5-mile tour is free to join and runs on tips; the company suggests $15–25 per person.
- Chicago Greeter. This free, volunteer-led program pairs visitors with local guides. Check its website for winter availability.
4. Free self-guided interiors and the Pedway
You can build a superb self-guided tour from the lobbies alone. These are working buildings, so stay on the ground floor, keep photography quick and follow security staff.
- Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.): free and open daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m. It's closed on Thanksgiving (Nov 26), Christmas (Dec 25) and New Year's Day. Preston Bradley Hall's Tiffany dome is 38 feet across and contains about 30,000 pieces of glass, according to both the Chicago Architecture Center and the City of Chicago; it was restored in 2008. Free docent tours run year-round on Thursdays and Fridays at 1:15 p.m. They're first come, first served, so arrive early.
- The Rookery (209 S. LaSalle St.): Burnham & Root's 1888 building, with a light court remodeled by Frank Lloyd Wright starting in 1905. You can usually step into the lobby on weekdays; the guided options are in the next section.
- Marquette Building (140 S. Dearborn St.): its 1895 lobby has a rare Tiffany mosaic frieze.
- Chicago Board of Trade (141 W. Jackson Blvd.): an Art Deco landmark from 1930. Lobby access can be limited, so a guided tour is the reliable way in.
- Palmer House (17 E. Monroe St.): a grand hotel lobby with a painted ceiling. It's a hotel, so act like a guest and have a coffee or a drink.
- Union Station Great Hall (225 S. Canal St.): a Beaux-Arts waiting room and an easy stop between trains.
- The Monadnock, Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower, Merchandise Mart and Carbide & Carbon Building (now the Pendry hotel): admire them from outside, or step into public areas when they're open. Access to private lobbies varies.
The Pedway
According to the Chicago Department of Transportation, the Pedway links more than 40 blocks of the central business district and more than 50 buildings over about five miles, and tens of thousands of pedestrians use it every day. CAC traces it back to a 1951 link between the Red and Blue Line subway stations; today it connects buildings such as Macy's on State, the Cultural Center and Block 37. Some sections close at night and on weekends, which is why tour routes differ between weekdays and weekends. On your own, use it to hop between stops. On a guided walk such as the Underground Pedway & Downtown Secrets tour, it becomes the attraction.
5. Frank Lloyd Wright and the historic houses
The Frank Lloyd Wright Trust runs tours all winter. Every Trust site is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Day and January 2. Unity Temple also closes on Black Friday, and the Rookery, Robie House and Unity Temple close on New Year's Eve. Trust tours are booked through the Trust itself.
- The Rookery (Loop): the Light Court tour lasts 45 minutes and costs $15. The Light Court + Burnham Library tour lasts 60 minutes, costs $20 and runs Mondays and Wednesdays. Tours run Monday–Friday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
- Home & Studio (Oak Park): tours run daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The guided interior tour costs $24. Inside and Out ($38) adds a 45-minute outdoor audio walk of the historic district; on an icy day, stick to the interior tour.
- Unity Temple (Oak Park): tours run Monday–Saturday, 9 a.m.–4:15 p.m. The guided tour lasts 45 minutes and costs $20; the self-guided audio tour costs $18.
- Robie House (Hyde Park): tours run Thursday–Monday, 10 a.m.–2:30 p.m. A Modern Home lasts 60 minutes and costs $24. The in-depth tour costs $75 and runs Friday–Sunday in winter. To get there, take CTA bus #6 (Jackson Park Express) to Stony Island and 57th St., or Metra Electric to 55th-56th-57th St.
Getting to Oak Park: take the CTA Green Line west (toward Harlem) to the Oak Park stop. Unity Temple is a 5–10 minute walk north via Oak Park Ave. and Lake St. The Home & Studio is a 15–20 minute walk (north on Oak Park Ave. to Chicago Ave., then west three blocks). Trains run about every 20 minutes. Metra's Union Pacific West line from Ogilvie is a faster alternative.
Glessner House and the Driehaus Museum
Glessner House (1800 S. Prairie Ave.) is H. H. Richardson's 1887 masterpiece. Tours last about 75 minutes and run Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $17 for seniors and students, and groups are small. In 2026 the house closed for tours during January, so check whether that repeats in January 2027. December's special Servants Tours run Dec 12, 13, 19 and 20, 2026. Book with the house directly.
The Driehaus Museum (40 E. Erie St.) is a Gilded Age marble mansion. It's open Wednesday 11 a.m.–7 p.m. (pay what you wish 4–7 p.m.) and Thursday–Sunday 11 a.m.–5 p.m., and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students; children 12 and under get in free. It's closed Nov 26, Dec 24 and Dec 25, and closes at 3 p.m. on Nov 25 and Dec 31. Tickets are sold by the museum.
6. Observation decks: the skyline overview
From a deck you can see the whole skyline at once, which is the closest thing in winter to the river view.
| Skydeck (Willis Tower) | 360 CHICAGO (875 N. Michigan) | |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 103rd floor, 1,353 ft | 94th floor, 1,030 ft |
| Thrill feature | The Ledge (glass boxes 4.3 ft out), included | TILT (tilts you 30° outward), extra |
| Adult price | From $32 (youth 3–11 from $24) | From $27 online (child from $19); TILT packages from $35 |
| Winter hours | Oct 1–Feb 28: daily 9 a.m.–8 p.m., Sat to 9 p.m.; last entry 30 min before close | Daily 9 a.m.–11 p.m.; last entry 10 p.m. |
| Architecture angle | Looks over the Loop's historic core and the river | Looks down Michigan Ave. and along the lakefront |
Our pick: Skydeck (4.6/5 from 5,199 reviews) if you want to understand the Loop, 360 CHICAGO (4.4/5 from 3,905 reviews) if you want the lake and a later night visit. The Chicago CityPASS ($144 adult; 4.7/5 from 1,032 reviews) includes Skydeck with Expedited Entry and gives you a choice that includes 360 CHICAGO; our CityPASS guide does the sums.
7. The one boat still sailing
Wendella says it sails year-round with heated lower lounges on every boat except the open-air Ouilmette. The 90-minute tour costs $45 (4.8/5 from 9,866 reviews) and the 45-minute tour $28 (4.7/5 from 2,968 reviews). Winter departure times appear only in its live booking calendar. For seating and layers, see What to Wear on a Chicago Boat Tour in November and Winter and Best Time of Day for a Winter Chicago River Cruise. For an operator comparison, see CAC First Lady vs Wendella vs Shoreline in Late Fall.
If your sailing is cancelled for weather, sort out your refund or rebooking first (our cancellation and refund policies by operator explain who refunds what). Then walk five minutes to the CAC for the city model, or take the Pedway to the Cultural Center. If you have a free afternoon, Skydeck shows you the same buildings from above.
8. Art on theMART from the Riverwalk
The Merchandise Mart's river facade becomes a huge outdoor projection screen. Art on theMART runs Thursday–Sunday, 7:30–8 p.m., through late December 2026, and a Nutcracker program runs Nov 19–Dec 27. It's free to watch from the Riverwalk between Wells and Franklin; dress for 20–30 minutes of standing still. The 2027 season is expected to resume in spring, but dates aren't announced yet.

Two-day itinerary
- Day 1: follow the one-day plan above.

Tips for touring in the cold
- According to the National Weather Service's 1991–2020 normals for Chicago (measured at O'Hare), normal highs in December, January and February are 36.6°F, 31.6°F and 35.7°F, and normal lows are 24.4°F, 18.8°F and 21.8°F. Wind off the lake makes it feel colder.
- Choose tours with a high indoor share on the coldest days, and save outdoor routes for mild afternoons.
- Wear boots with grip: lobby marble and Pedway stairs get slick from melted snow.
- Lobbies close early on weekends and holidays, and some Pedway sections close at night and on weekends. Weekday mornings give you the most access.
- Book Wright tours in advance, since groups are small.
- For more on whether a cold cruise is still a good idea, see Are Chicago Boat Tours Worth It in the Cold? Visiting in late November? See Thanksgiving Weekend in Chicago 2026 and Chicago Holiday Boat Tours 2026.
Plan ahead: Open House Chicago, CAC's free festival that opens buildings to the public, happens in October, not winter, so keep it in mind for a future trip.
